Current threats to National Security
The risks to UK security, are becoming increasingly diverse.and widening considerably. Previous threats had been more predictable, but today the threats are constantly in a state of flux and being able to adapt quickly is paramount. This ability to adapt and combine the UK’s collective security resources is now of significant importance and therefore 'working together' is vital.
SIS plays a vital role in supporting UK national security against three of the four highest priority risks –
- Countering international terrorism
- Combating weapons proliferation
- Supporting stability overseas
- Securing the UK's cyber advantage.
This is laid out in some detail in the Strategic Defence and Security Review, which focusses on identifying risks and opportunities at the earliest possible stage, shaping developments and preventing threats from emerging.
